Pattern 02 · People pleasing

How to stop people pleasing.

People pleasing is saying yes to keep the peace, even when it costs you. You stop people pleasing by saying small, kind noes, letting the guilty sting pass without fixing it, and noticing that the people who matter stay.

Why do I people please?

Somewhere along the way, keeping others happy became the safest way to stay close. It worked, so you kept doing it. The trouble is that people end up close to the helpful version of you, not the real one.

What are the signs of people pleasing?

  • You say yes before you have checked whether you want to.
  • You apologize for things that are not your fault.
  • Someone else's bad mood feels like your job to fix.
  • You rehearse how to say no, then say yes anyway.
  • You feel resentful, then guilty for feeling resentful.

What is the flip side of keeping the peace?

What does the research say?

After a conversation, people consistently underestimate how much the other person liked them. Most of the disapproval we brace for is not there.

Questions people ask

Is people pleasing a trauma response?

It can grow out of hard experiences, and it is often a learned habit for staying safe and liked. Habits can loosen with practice. Flexi does not diagnose; if past experiences still feel heavy, a licensed counselor can help.

How do I stop people pleasing at work?

Start with one small no a week on something low stakes, like a meeting you do not need to attend. Build from there.

Will people be angry if I stop?

Some may be surprised at first. Most adjust quickly, and the relationships that last get more honest.
